The challenge
With strong links to GCSE Science and to the Engineering Diploma, plugin2engineering aimed to challenge students aged 11-16 to put their science skills to the test through a game in which they take on the role of a Project Manager responsible for installing the power network on an artificial island.
To give students an insight into the real skills required by those involved at different stages of the delivery of power to homes and businesses on a day to day basis, EdComs Film was asked to produce portraits of those working across the network journey in the UK. The intention was to demonstrate the range of career opportunities available within the energy industry as inspiration to students with an interest in science and engineering.
Our approach
EdComs Film spent time 'on the job' with an apprentice linesperson, a jointer, a fitter, a gas service engineer and a turbine technician in order to offer students of real taste of their everyday work, training and skills for the job. Through a combination of interview material and illustrative sequences, we brought to life a number of jobs within the energy industry of which teenagers may not even have been aware.
Each contributor from E.ON also set students a challenge via a mobile phone message which we recorded as part of the interactive game testing engineering and science skills.

"The video footage has proved to be an invaluable tool in attracting students into the world of engineering, the footage really helps bring the topic to life and is the next best thing to having engineers talking directly to students."
