Transport for London: School travel plan accreditation events

The challenge

Every year, Transport for London (TfL) holds award ceremonies throughout London to award schools whose travel plans have been accredited through its very successful School Travel Plan Accreditation Scheme.

This year, TfL wanted to make the day even more engaging for the 100 or so young people attending each event. Therefore, it looked to EdComs for help in developing and delivering workshops.

We developed a series of fun, interactive activities designed to encourage the students' engagement with a range of travel-related themes.

We wanted students to:

  • meet and work with students from other schools across London
  • discuss the transport and travel-related issues that affect them
  • use group-working skills
  • use presentation skills
  • have fun.

Our approach

Our biggest challenge was to create workshops that would be relevant and engaging for students in the wide age range of 5–18, from all types of schools.

In response, the Live team created a schedule of activities, starting with warm-up games and leading to a group discussion task, requiring the students to use a range of skills. Under the supervision of the EdComs team, the groups then created short drama pieces to highlight the outcomes of their discussions.

The presentations were showcased and peer assessed before being presented to the adults during the afternoon award ceremonies.

Outcomes

The events were well attended. Although the official report has not yet been finished, initial feedback has been incredibly positive.
