The National Science Learning Centre and Regional Science Learning Centres provide Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to teachers around England. In 2009, EdComs was commissioned to set up a panel of science teachers and technicians for the Science Learning Centres to consult on a regular basis about their needs.
We established a standing panel of 1,200 science teachers and technicians from all around England, across three education stages (primary, secondary, FE) and specialising in the three main sciences, as well as other STEM subjects. To date we have carried out six online surveys and a handful of qualitative groups – both online and face-to-face – and are currently refreshing and expanding the panel for further continued consultation in 2010/2011. Subjects we have explored have ranged from essential CPD needs to the appeal of marketing materials, all of which have helped the Science Learning Centres tailor their provision to best meet the needs of teachers and technicians all around the country.
